This is the moment a German tourist damaged the Fountain of Neptune, knocking a chunk off the marble sea god's chariot and cracking a horse's hoof while trying to take a photo.

The 22-year-old German was quickly arrested when police near where the statue is located in Florence, Italy saw what was happening on CCTV images and rushed to the scene.

The German tourist has not been named but is set to be hit with a huge fine for climbing on the 16th-century monument.

Police estimate the damage to be at least EUR 5,000 (GBP 4,200) with the CCTV images shared by cops showing the man scrambling over the fountain located in the centre of the city's Piazza della Signoria.

He was over the water before climbing up the statue itself to take a picture and then rushing off.
