STORYLINE:

The harvest has begun in many Burgundy vineyards near Beaune, a renowned wine-producing region in France.

The work is expected to last throughout the week. After two difficult years with climate problems, French winegrowers have high hopes for a bumper harvest this year.
According to the first observations of the Interprofessional Burgundy Wine Bureau, the several hailstorms experienced in the region should not affect wine production.

This year's harvest is about 10 days later than that of last year.

SOUNDBITE (French): FRANCOIS LABET, Winemaker
"This is a bunch of Pinot Noir that we like, a very dense, very compact, very tight grape. It's also bluer than black in color."

After the drought in 2019 and the frost in 2021, demand for Burgundy wines is increasing.

But Burgundy winegrowers' stocks are now at their lowest levels.

French wine production in 2023 is expected to be between 44 and 47 million hectoliters, reaching the average between 2018 and 2022, according to Agreste, the statistical service of France's agriculture ministry.
