Travel by land, on the city subway and at New York's main airports has been paralyzed as a result of a record downpour that has affected the entire city.

The governor and the mayor of the city, Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams respectively, have declared this Friday a state of emergency in the metropolis, as well as on Long Island and the Hudson Valley, due to the torrential rains with which they have woken up residents of the entire large metropolitan area, now almost collapsed.

In a late morning press conference to address the bad weather, Hochul and Adams urged New Yorkers to stay indoors and stay off the roads.

"This is something that we cannot take lightly, and we have not taken it lightly," Adamas said. "This is a dangerous weather condition, and it is not over. If you are home, stay home. It is time for caution," he warned.

As of this afternoon, nearly 8 inches of rain has fallen at JFK Airport, according to the National Weather Service, making Friday the wettest day since records began there in 1948. The service warned that the rain would continue. for hours and the threat of continued flooding on highways, streets and underpasses. Serious damage was also reported in the city's subway.
