A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook homes when it struck the Philippines this evening.

The offshore quake struck 130 km (81 miles) southeast of General Santos City in the south of the archipelago at around 7.21 pm local time.

Buildings were rattled and lights were seen wobbling.

Officials said it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas.

Aftershocks are likely over the coming days but the event has not prompted any tsunami warnings.
