The Guardia Civil, through their Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group based in Potes, carried out a challenging rescue operation in the midst of a snowstorm and fierce blizzard in the Canal de la Jenduda, Picos de Europa. The individuals rescued were a father and his underage son, who were located yesterday afternoon displaying mild hypothermia symptoms.

At noon yesterday, 02.11., GREIM officers received an alert about two mountaineers stranded in the upper part of the Canal de la Jenduda. Due to heavy snowfall in recent hours and the prevailing blizzard, they were unable to advance or retreat.

Given the adverse weather conditions in Cantabria, the collaboration of Cantur in Cantabria was sought to put the Fuente De cable car into operation, which had been halted due to strong winds. This allowed #GREIM personnel to quickly reach the upper station and expedite the rescue.

From that point, the Guardia Civil mountain specialists braved strong wind gusts and snow to reach the aforementioned canal. Upon locating the two mountaineers, the officers ascertained that they were in good physical condition but were beginning to show signs of mild hypothermia.

To ensure their safe descent, the Guardia Civil officers equipped the rescued individuals with harnesses and secured them with ropes, facilitating their return to Fuente De, where the rescue operation was concluded.

The two rescued mountaineers are a father and his 14-year-old son, both residents of Aviles, Asturias, aged 47 and 14, respectively.
