In Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, home to a large number of Afghan refugees, a crackdown has begun on Afghans that the government wants to send back to Afghanistan.

Police deputy commissioner Junaid Iqbal Khan said up to 74 people had so far been rounded up and moved to a transit centre -- prior to possible deportation -- up to 40 of them without any proper documents.

A nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants, especially Afghan citizens, has commenced in response to the federal government’s ultimatum a week ago to all undocumented immigrants, ordering them to leave Pakistan.

Now ruled by the Taliban, Afghanistan is desperately poor and ruled by an extremely strict interpretation of Islamic law.
