The 2023 Mayors Exchange Conference on Maritime Silk Road City Influence wrapped up Saturday in east China's Wenzhou City, an important node along the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
The two-day conference explored the history of the Maritime Silk Road and promoted the Silk Road spirit through city and people exchanges, advancing the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): NICOLA CASARINI, Senior Fellow, Istituto Affari Internazionali
"Italy like China is an ancient civilization. And if we go back in time during the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties, it was the time when the ancient silk roads were connecting Europe to the Chinese empire. At the time, a famous Italian traveler, Marco Polo from Venice, would reach this port city in China. And today we're here to study and explore more the contemporary silk roads (BRI) that were announced 10 years ago."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): AUGUSTO SOTO, Professor, Esade Ramon Llull University
"I feel extremely happy to be here, in one of the treasures of China. This city is magnificent. If you go back in history, you understand China's first steps to enter globalization, you understand the first steps of the Belt and Road Initiative. So for me and for our fellows from each side of each continent gathering here today, it is extremely important to interact with you to develop the civilization of dialogue and to continue cooperating for a better community and prosperity for mankind."
So far, China has signed more than 230 BRI cooperation agreements with over 150 countries and 30-plus international organizations.
