STORYLINE:

STANDUP (English): ZHENG XIN, Xinhua correspondent
"Global media leaders are now gathering in China's Guangzhou and Kunming for the fifth World Media Summit (WMS).
As the world is undergoing accelerated changes unseen in a century, how could news media address common challenges and conduct more fruitful cooperation?
Some of the attendees have shared their thoughts."

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MARK LEVINE, American professor with the Minzu University of China
"At the summit, there are representatives of media from almost 200 different media agencies and think tanks and universities and government offices from more than 100 countries (and regions) here. These are all media people, people from media agencies. So they have a voice to the world. And everyone is talking about the importance of communication, the importance of dialogue. And that in some places, people are kind of cutting off communication, and the theme of this conference is exactly the opposite, that we need to talk more. We need to learn more. We need to understand more. And that through doing that, the world becomes a better place."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JONATHAN RICHARD WELLS, President and Bureau Chief of SIPA USA
"My expectations are to meet a lot of colleagues from around the world, including colleagues from China and to exchange ideas about the future and new opportunities for media.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): KHALID MUBARAK AL-SHAFI, Editor-in-chief of The Peninsula Newspaper, Qatar
"It is a good time for all the media (that) are coming here for talking about what is the future.
I think we have two challenges about media. We have the first one, AI. The second, I think, is social media. I think we have some problems about the future for the media.
When I was in the summit, I think everyone is talking about what has happened. If we have a solution about this one, I think we are successful."

SOUNDBITE 4 (Spanish): FERNANDO SANCHEZ MEJORADA, President of National Network of Public Media of Mexico
"There are staff from all over the world and I believe that it is very beneficial to be able to discuss journalism and communication issues with colleagues from all over the world in a globalized world like the one we live in. I think it is essential."

SOUNDBITE 5 (Russian): ANDREY PERSHIN, Deputy general director of Rossiyskaya Gazeta
"I think this is great. This is already the fifth summit, and it certainly has an important international dimension. The most important thing is that people from different countries and continents meet and communicate with each other here, and they are trying to develop a positive information agenda in the current situation. It is very important."

Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Guangzhou, China.
