World's Largest Crane, Big Carl, Lifts Spectacular Dome onto Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station in Somerset, UK
This footage was filmed and produced 15 December 2023.
In a remarkable milestone, the world's largest crane, Big Carl, delicately positioned the 245-tonne steel dome atop Hinkley Point C's first reactor building in Somerset. The £26 billion nuclear power station achieved a significant moment as the dome, measuring 47 meters in diameter and made of 38 prefabricated panels, was successfully lifted into place.
This achievement marks the completion of the first reactor building's roof, paving the way for the installation of the first nuclear reactor next year. The power station, featuring two nuclear reactors, is poised to provide reliable zero-carbon electricity for six million homes, contributing to Britain's energy security for decades to come.
The meticulously planned lift took advantage of a favorable weather window to ensure a smooth and secure placement. The dome, part of the reactor building's inner containment, symbolizes the progress at Hinkley Point C, where innovative construction methods, including prefabrication and modular construction, are integral to the project's success. The power station plays a vital role in the UK's journey towards achieving Net Zero, reducing reliance on imported energy and supporting the shift to a zero-carbon future.
