The Kuril Islands boast 68 surface volcanoes, with 37 classified as active or potentially active. Remarkably, there are approximately 100 underwater volcanoes in the surrounding waters. Alaid, the northernmost volcano island, stands as the highest in the Kuril archipelago, reaching an absolute height of 2339 meters.
Ebeko, an active volcano on Paramushir Island, stands at 1156 meters. Known for its unusual summit structure with three craters, it is a focal point for scientific research, featuring thermal springs that enrich nearby streams with chemically diverse water. This dynamic volcanic activity in the Kuril Islands continues to captivate researchers and enthusiasts alike.
