Monterey Park residents are hosting a candlelight evening this Sunday night; Its inhabitants have no longer felt safe and without the courage to move forward.

As this Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance & Studio, the city of Monterey Park remembers the 11 victims who died as a result of the shooting of a lone attacker during the Lunar New Year celebration.

The community does not stop regretting the unfortunate event in which innocent men and women died, and that a year later continues in the process to overcome the tragedy that mourned not only the city, but the entire country.

Since the night of the mass shooting, the Star Ballroom Dance & Studio has remained closed, and it is not expected that in the short term it will be able to reopen its doors and that dance couples will return to its floor.

“I think, especially for a lot of Asians, it's still a sore spot,” Kevin Leung, a kung-fu instructor in Monterey Park, told KTLA.

“Even though they had the Buddhist ceremony to let the dead move on, (people) look at this place and still feel that little sense of unease, and I think that still weighs heavily on people's memories,” he added.

There is not a day in which the residents of Monterey Park do not remember the incident that occurred that night of January 21, 2023, causing its inhabitants to no longer feel safe and without the courage to move forward.

Last week, the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, two miles away in the neighboring city of Alhambra, hosted an event to keep the community together and its residents resilient.

The event was led by Brandon Tsay, the hero who confronted and disarmed the attacker when he was trying to enter the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, where he allegedly planned his armed attack.

Monterey Park residents are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. This Sunday a candlelight vigil in memory of the 11 victims will be held on the front lawn of Monterey Park City Hall, 320 West Newmark Avenue.

On the night of January 21, the gunman, identified as Huu Can Tran, 72, of Hemet, was the perpetrator of the deadliest mass shooting in the history of Los Angeles County.
