Namibia's minister of labor, industrial relations, and employment creation has emphasized the significance of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, hailing it as a valuable opportunity for his country to bolster trade across various sectors.

He made the remarks during the Namibia 2024 "Happy Spring Festival" gala held on Saturday last week in Namibia's capital city Windhoek.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): UTONI NUJOMA, Namibia's Minister of Labor, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation
"The Belt and Road Initiative is highly appreciated in Africa. And I would urge Namibia to make use of this opportunity to trade more with China in all the sectors, energy, infrastructure, education, science and technology. We have to work together to make the world a better place."

Acknowledging China's economic and technological advancements, the minister said Namibia is expected to emulate China, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): UTONI NUJOMA, Namibia's Minister of Labor, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation
"Actually, they (China) have advanced highly in AI and also of the battery cars. They have advanced a lot, and I think Namibia should emulate that. China has assisted Namibia since its independence with scholarships. Many Namibian students were trained in China. The Chinese have a space (tracking, telemetry and command) station here in Namibia. We need to train more Namibians in science and technology. It's a win-win situation. And we hope to continue to strengthen our excellent bilateral relations."
