Bioluminescent planktons glow bright blue at night on beach
Bioluminescent planktons glowed bright blue at night on a Thai beach.
Footage shows the waves pushing towards the shore and the organisms became visible as they illuminated in Thailand on August 15.
The light produced by bioluminescent plankton results from a chemical reaction that takes place inside their bodies. This reaction involves a molecule called luciferin, which reacts with oxygen and an enzyme called luciferase to produce light. The colour of the light depends on the specific type of plankton, but it's usually blue, green, or turquoise.
