A couple's romantic moment took an unexpected turn when a wild monitor lizard photobombed their video.

Footage shows the pair standing on a viewing platform overlooking the forest at Khao Chong Chang Viewpoint in Surat Thani, Thailand.

They were lovingly embracing and admiring the scenery when the reptile suddenly appeared just a few steps away.

The duo froze when they heard the rustling noise thinking it could be a snake before bursting into laughter as the lizard quickly scurried off.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
