American and British forces launch airstrikes to weaken Houthi rebels in Yemen
This footage was filmed and produced 24 February 2024.
American and British forces launched a series of airstrikes on Feb. 24 to weaken the military capabilities of the Houthi rebels in Yemen, targeting 18 locations in response to recent attacks on commercial shipping, the Pentagon confirmed.
The strikes, which were described as "necessary and proportionate," aimed at hitting Houthi underground weapons storage facilities, missile storage facilities, unmanned aerial systems, air defense systems, radars, and a helicopter, the Pentagon said.
U.S. Navy aircraft from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Royal Air Force aircraft were involved in the operation, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
The British Ministry of Defense said that RAF Typhoons and Voyager refueling tankers took off from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, targeting long-range drones used by the Houthis for reconnaissance and attack missions.
The joint operation was in response to the Houthis' continued attacks on international vessels, including ones owned by the U.S. and British, creating a threat to global economy, regional security, and stability.
The Biden administration emphasized the need to protect lives and the free flow of commerce in critical waterways, stating that further action will be taken if necessary to defend against illegal attacks that disrupt humanitarian aid delivery and cause environmental damage.
