China's robotics companies are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into their designs.

Unitree Robotics, a startup based in east China's Hangzhou, has developed a robot with human-like balance control, and the ability to make a choice when facing an obstacle all thanks to its AI "brain".

The company's CEO says with AI's advanced self-learning, the amount of time needed for the robot's fine motor training is reduced from roughly seven years, to just a few months.

Wang Xingxing, Founder/CEO, Unitree Robotics:

"In the past, robots had to be programed manually for different scenarios. For example, if there was a different terrain in front of it, or if there was a cup you wanted it to grab, we humans had to type in all those codes. So, it would take a lot of time and energy. Now with AI, you don't need to change the model or put in more manpower. You just put it in a different simulated scenario and let it get the training. All we need is supply it with electricity, equip it with some GPU and CPU commuting power, and the robot takes care of training itself automatically."

Going forward, the CEO says, the company is on track to unveil AI-powered robots designed for industrial applications.

Wang Xingxing, Founder/CEO, Unitree Robotics:

"We are now developing more dexterous fingers so that we can make more advanced robots. We will put them in simulated scenarios for physical tasks, collect more data and conduct some trainings, and hopefully in a year or two, we will be able to have humanoid robots assist production in factories."

According to industry estimates, by 2030, the scale of the global humanoid robot market will top 260 billion U.S. dollars, with China's market contributing around 50 billion U.S. dollars to the total.
