Throwing the embroidered ball is a traditional activity of the Shangsi Festival, which falls on the third day of the third lunar month, is a traditional Chinese festival dating back to the pre-Qin period. It has now become one of the most important traditional festivals for the Zhuang people in the province.

The festival serves as the oldest Valentine's Day for the Zhuang people, where, in ancient times, young men and women would gather in the streets to sing and celebrate, and assemble by the riverside for feasting, singing songs to convey feelings, and throwing embroidered balls to express love.
