STORYLINE:

Technology experts lauded China's electric mobility (e-mobility) technology at the just-concluded Kenya Power E-Mobility Conference as Kenyans continue to embrace green modes of transport.

The conference brought together more than 200 delegates, including government officials, donors, and e-mobility experts from across the globe, to review innovative and transformative solutions to decarbonize the transport sector.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ALEX WACHIRA, Principal secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum
"Most important is to congratulate the Chinese companies that have set up the local manufacturing plants in Kenya because that is helping us in the uptake in terms of new vehicles and also job creation."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): HEZBON MOSE, Chair of the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya
"Chinese have played a huge role because most of the components, most of the products, are coming from China. So I think they are playing a critical role in the growth of EV space in the country today."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JIT BHATTACHARYA, CEO of BasiGo, a Kenyan startup
"We have partnerships with a number of Chinese OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) that have helped enable our business here, (like) a Chinese corporation delivering high-quality 9-meter electric buses which we're able to locally assemble and deliver to Nairobi matatu operators."

Kenya developed a framework for electric vehicle charging and battery swapping infrastructure in September 2023 to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

As of December 2023, EVs accounted for 1.62 percent of the 165,913 vehicles registered in Kenya that year, with the country aiming to reach 5 percent by 2025.
