A severe hail storm battered homes in the Philippines as the country baked in an extreme heatwave this month.

Footage shows heavy rain and small hailstones pummeling Bauko town in Mountain Province on April 30 afternoon.

Resident Bernard Tugade said: 'The rain suddenly fell in our town. We were shocked because it sounded like coins battering the roof of the covered court. We saw there were hailstones along with the rain.'

Ana Clauren, a weather specialist at state weather agency PAGASA, said: 'Hailstorms normally happen during intense heat with high evaporation rate. Clouds then form due to condensation. When precipitation falls back to the earth, not all of it melts. Some of it falls as hail.'

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are entering their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
