Heavy snow blanketed roads on Interstate 80 in California

The thick snow caused westbound traffic to halt in Truckee and at the Nevada State line at 10:30 pm on May 4, with no estimated time of reopening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Truckee Division.

Meanwhile, eastbound traffic on I-80 was under R2 restrictions - which require chains or traction devices to be installed on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles under 6,500 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on all four wheels - from Alta to the Nevada State line, with trucks facing maximum restrictions.

The Department of Transportation conducted road clearing operations amid 'challenging conditions'.

CHP - Truckee later announced that eastbound traffic on I-80 has been permitted to proceed over Donner Summit with restrictions lifted.

However, westbound traffic on I-80 continued to be diverted in Truckee.
