Train services were disrupted as a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Japan today.

Footage shows passengers waiting in a stationary Shinkansen car after the tremor knocked down power in Aomori Prefecture, on December 12.

An announcement issued through the sound system said: 'Railway operation has been suspended due to a power failure.'

Passenger Mika said: 'The Shinkansen has restored power and resumed service. It was just a little delay, everyone in the car is calm and did not panic.'

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the tremor hit 114km (71 miles) off the coast of Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 am local time, at a depth of 10.7km (6.6 miles).

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a possible tsunami that could hit Hokkaido, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures.

The quake comes just days after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that injured at least 50 people in the same region on December 8.

Japan is highly prone to quakes and volcanic eruptions as it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active area where multiple tectonic plates collide.
