USA: Sarasota Police Officer's Heroic Rescue
Sarasota, FL, USA - May 3, 2024
Officer Michael Skinner of the Sarasota Police Marine Unit showcased exemplary bravery and swift action on May 3rd, 2024, when he responded to a distress call involving an unmanned vessel circling dangerously in the inner coastal waterway near channel marker 72, close to Phillippi Creek. The entire dramatic rescue unfolded and was captured on Officer Skinner's body-worn camera.
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Skinner discovered a vessel slowly making circles, with an unconscious man lying face down on the deck. Without hesitation, he skillfully maneuvered his police vessel to intercept the boat, expertly wedging it against a nearby seawall to prevent further danger. Boarding the vessel, Officer Skinner promptly shut down its engine, halting its hazardous motion.
The unconscious man, later identified as boat owner Paul Hudson, received vital medical aid from Sarasota County Fire Rescue, who were on standby along the seawall. Thanks to Officer Skinner's decisive actions, Hudson, who was semi-conscious, received timely medical attention and was swiftly transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.
Officer Skinner's heroic actions highlight the critical importance of safety measures such as the emergency cutoff switch, a topic he and his colleague Officer Dixon regularly advocate for and educate boaters about, particularly during National Safe Boating Week. Their efforts were instrumental in the passage of Ethan's Law through the state legislature.
Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche commended Officer Skinner's quick response and selfless actions, emphasizing their alignment with the department's commitment to serving and protecting the community.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident and to further enhance safety protocols for boaters in the area.
