In an awe-inspiring spectacle, residents across Portugal were treated to a dazzling display as what is believed to be a meteor streaked across the night sky on Saturday evening (18.5.2024). The phenomenon, captured in numerous videos and photographs shared on social media, captured the imagination of thousands.

Spectators were taken aback as a radiant sphere traversed the heavens, casting its luminous glow. While most sightings were reported in northern regions, there were also accounts from southern areas, including the wider Lisbon area.

Portugal's Civil Protection Agency website recorded a meteor fall in the Castro Daire region, although the indication was subsequently removed. Local fire services were unable to provide further details. However, a source from the Operations Support Directorate of the Viseu Region (CDOS) reported that authorities received a citizen's call at 0:01 on Sunday, alerting them to a possible object fall in Serra de Montemuro. Authorities rushed to the scene, but as of 2 a.m., nothing had been found.
