STORYLINE:

Eighteen Kenyan youth will participate later this week in the Huawei global ICT (information and communications technology) competition in Shenzhen.

The Huawei ICT Competition, initiated in 2015, consists of contests in the fields of cloud computing, networking, and innovation. The mission of the competition is to share technology sector knowledge.

Gavin Gao, chief executive officer of Huawei Kenya, said that the Kenyan youth will form six teams and compete at the global final in cloud computing and in network tracks.

"Talent cultivation is one of our most important investments in Kenya. The Huawei ICT academy has operated here for over 10 years and certified over 1,050 lectures in advanced skills and supported them to train over 5,800 talents annually."

The competition has attracted more than 120,000 students from 2,000 universities and colleges in 74 countries and regions around the world.

Moses Wetang'ula, speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya, said that technology continues to become an integral part of day-to-day life, both on a personal and business level.

Wetang'ula added that the competition is expected to provide Kenyan youth with training that will enable them to meet the market's demand for a digitally skilled workforce.
