Mural highlights legacy of Southern California indigenous nation
Recognition of the legacy of our ancestors is vital in the education of new generations.
That is why the city of El Monte and the muralist known as Man One were in charge of immortalizing the people of the Kizh nation, also known as the Gabrieleño band of Indians, with a mural of large proportions.
Man One notes that the mural shows, as a central theme, “unity and harmony in a sacred land” that we must honor and maintain.
[I want to] give them a little bit of history, enthusiasm and give them that little bit of whatever, to give them that support,” highlights Man One. “So that they go out and be good creatives in this world.”
The mural shows Kizh iconography, but also highlights the gaze of Chief Ernest Teutimez Salas, spiritual leader of the tribe.
