The Hamas-controlled Gazan Health Ministry said Saturday that more than a million cases of infectious diseases have been registered in different health centres in the enclave since the outbreak of the war with Israel, many of which were diagnosed as hepatits A "due to overcrowding and low levels of hygiene in the shelters."

"Government primary health care centres continue their work despite shortages of medicine, water, food and security. Since the beginning of the aggression, 85% of visits have been classified as emergency services," it said in a statement.

The Gazan authorities warn that there is "a significant shortage of blood units" due to the impossibility of finding new donors and a lack of laboratory equipment.

"We call on international organisations and institutions to bring in blood units from outside the Gaza Strip," the statement said, pointing out that more than 493 health workers have been killed by Israeli bombardment and 310 of them have been arrested by the occupying forces.

The Gazan ministry accuses Israel of carrying out "violations" against the health system in the Strip, of which 155 health centres have been attacked in almost eight months of the offensive.
