STORYLINE:
A Chilean expert criticized the U.S.'s tariff hikes on Chinese new energy products, stating that the move will disrupt the economic system and undermine environmental protection efforts.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish): MARCELA VERA, Economist and scholar of the University of Santiago, Chile (Usach)
"Chinese (electric) cars are a huge innovation process, not only in terms of electromobility, but also in how they interrelate with communication systems, artificial intelligence and robotics.
These elements are not found in the other automobile markets and, therefore, preventing this type of market (China) from developing, as it should be in a competitive system, would imply that the United States is once again interfering in the economic system, but also in environmental control.
There are already several U.S. positions that harmed environmental protection and, unfortunately, this is one more.
You can observe that the United States is trying to block the development of industrialization in the automotive system, and also a green one. It must be said that this is not just any automotive system, we are thinking about how to produce a transportation system that guarantees sustainability, low prices and high levels of technology. This is the example that China is developing today. The United States is still betting on competition and not on cooperation, even at the expense of the environment."
