Rescue operations by villagers are underway as over 2,000 people are feared dead in a landslide in Papua New Guinea.

The landslide struck Kaokalam village in Enga province, located over 600 km northwest of PNG's capital Port Moresby, burying the whole village as residents slept in their homes on May 24.

Over 2,000 people are estimated to have died in the recent landslide in Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister James Marape said on Wednesday.

Aerial footage revealed the full extent of the landslide, with boulders, uprooted trees, and mud debris scattering across the site.

Villagers in the area are actively organizing themselves to rescue those buried under the mud, which is progressing gradually.
