STORYLINE:
Jordan's newly expanded and repaired Ardha-Salt Road has been inaugurated. For Nuaimat, a Jordanian farmer and driver, the road's convenience and efficiency means less time traveling.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ISAM NUAIMAT, Farmer and driver
"Yes, the new Ardha-Salt Road saves me about two hours of travel each day. The new road that exists now is very comfortable to drive on. The ascents and descents are quite comfortable."
The Ardha-Salt Road is crucial to Jordan's agricultural and tourism sectors. It's the primary route connecting the Jordan Valley area to the city of As-Salt and the outskirts of Amman. It's also a significant link between Amman and the picturesque Dead Sea area.
The Jordan Valley, a strategic food reservoir in Jordan, provides agricultural products to all Jordanian governorates and exports them to neighboring countries.
In September 2018, China signed a significant agreement with Jordan to help renovate the Ardha-Salt Road by providing technical and administrative support. This collaboration brought increased lighting and expanded the road to four lanes from the previous two.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIU MAO, Project manager from China First Highway Engineering Company Ltd.
"During the construction of this road, there were many areas where we can learn from each other. Through the construction of this road, we have deepened mutual understanding and cooperation. As a representative of the Chinese company, I hope to contribute more to Jordan's infrastructure building in the future."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): FAISAL AL-NUAIMAT, Mayor of Ma'addi Municipality in Jordan Valley
"This project shortens the distance between Amman and the Jordan Valley. It also serves tourism, with tourist groups heading from Amman to the Jordan Valley. Today, this road has become safe and wide and does not pose any obstacles to those who take it."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Amman.
