PETA Protester Interrupts Red Sox Game Over University's Marmoset Experiments
Boston, MA, USA - May 31, 2024
In a dramatic display of protest, a supporter of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) made a bold statement during a Red Sox game at Fenway Park on 31 May. Amidst the excitement of University of Massachusetts–Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes throwing the first pitch, the protester stormed onto the field bearing a sign condemning the university's controversial menopause experiments on marmosets.
Brandishing a placard reading "Chancellor Reyes: End Cruel Tests on Marmosets!," the protester aimed to draw attention to the alleged horrors endured by these animals in the name of scientific research. However, their disruption was short-lived as security swiftly escorted them off the field.
The experiments in question involve the University of Massachusetts–Amherst researchers subjecting marmosets to invasive procedures, including the surgical implantation of electrodes onto their skulls and the removal of their ovaries. The animals are then subjected to hormonal manipulation and exposed to conditions mimicking hot flashes, despite marmosets not naturally experiencing menopause.
PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo condemned the experiments as "cruel and scientifically worthless," calling for the immediate cessation of such practices. Guillermo urged Chancellor Reyes to shut down the laboratory conducting these experiments and urged the university to adopt more humane, animal-free research methods.
The university has faced criticism and scrutiny over its treatment of animals, with allegations of severe burns inflicted on a marmoset during recovery from surgery and failure to promptly attend to sick animals. These incidents have prompted concern from both alumni and donors, with calls for greater accountability and adherence to ethical standards in research practices.
