The death toll in the Israeli rescue operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, which led to the release of four hostages, rose to 274 on Sunday (09.06.2024), bringing the total death toll in Gaza to 37,084 since the start of the war, the Hamas-controlled Gazan Health Ministry said.

On the last day, 698 people were injured by Israeli fire in this operation, and the total number of wounded since 7 October rose to 84,494 across the territory, most of them women and children, according to the ministry.

Based on these figures, 283 Gazans were killed and 814 wounded across Gaza in the last 24 hours.

The rescue was the largest carried out by the armed forces since 7 October and the first in months - since the military pulled Argentinian-Israelis Luis Norberto Har and Fernando Marman out of the Strip in February - but also one of the most violent days in the devastated Palestinian enclave.

Moreover, it came at a key moment for both external and internal tensions in Israel, with escalating violence on the border with Lebanon and pressure on the government to reach or not a deal for the release of the remaining hostages, with Hamas plaguing Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
