STORYLINE:

From Sunday to Tuesday, a group of over 20 Americans explored the sci-tech development in the eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.

The visit was part of the "Bridge of the Future" China-U.S. Youth Exchange Program.

The delegation comprised university students, technical professionals, as well as professors and entrepreneurs.

They visited the Yangtze River Delta Hi-Tech Park, the Grand neoBay Sci-Tech Innovation Park, and Fudan University.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MICHAEL JON SELDEN, CEO and Co-founder, Finless FOODS
"In America, we have a very hard time building technology centers or R&D centers. And it seems like that's really happening in Shanghai. You have these incredible high-tech parks that are being constructed. You have an incredible amount of housing that's being constructed for people, which means that you'll get the best of the best because it means that everyone can afford to live here and everybody can afford to get into the mix around becoming an entrepreneur, becoming a scientist, becoming an engineer, becoming a technologist."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ZACHARY JOSEPH WEBER REITZ, Lead data scientist, Paul G. Allen Research Center
"Well, I'm a scientist, so I always enjoy hearing a little bit about how academia is structured maybe a little bit differently at Fudan University. So, some of those professors were saying about maybe being a bit more supportive of students' lifestyles or actually helping with early career development of professors. I think it resonates with me because I think that's some things that I would like to see in American universities."
