The alarming surge in dengue fever cases and deaths has gripped Indonesia, with experts attributing the outbreak to the impact of climate change which has led to warmer weather conditions.

Indonesia's Health Ministry reported roughly 62,000 dengue cases with 475 deaths from January to mid-April, almost triple the 22,500 cases and 170 deaths during the same period of last year.

The sharp increase is a cause for concern as hospitals across the country, including one in south Jakarta, have grappled with a daily influx of dengue patients.

Doctors have observed an unusual trend in symptoms this year, where many people mistaken dengue for the common cold due to atypical manifestations. This made them to delay their visit to the hospital and usually they come only when their conditions have worsened.

Health experts identify the hot weather induced by the El Nino climate pattern as one of the primary drivers of this surge. The warmer rainy season has accelerated the life cycle of mosquitoes, enabling them to mature rapidly and prolong their lifespan.

The Health Ministry emphasizes that the most effective approach to mitigating the outbreak lies in regular water source drainage, proper covering of water containers, and the elimination of potential mosquito breeding grounds through recycling initiatives.

Recognizing the significance of public participation in safeguarding communities against the outbreak, the Indonesian government has underscored the crucial role individuals play, starting at the household level and expanding efforts to the national scale.
