Flash floods force rare Eld's deer onto streets in eastern China
The Eld's deer have been forced to gather in groups and move ashore to escape the floods as their habitats were submerged by the rising lake waters in southern China.
The video was filmed in Yueyang City in Hunan Province on June 24.
Mr. Luo, an eyewitness, described the scene he encountered around 6;00 a.m. near Dongting Lake while taking a walk. He heard animal calls and was surprised to see 40 to 50 Eld's deer running through the streets.
According to Mr. Luo, most of the deer were juveniles, with only a few adults among them. The leader of the group weighed around 200 to 250 kilograms, while the smaller deer weighed just over 50 kilograms.
Luo emphasised that despite the spectacular sight, onlookers refrained from getting too close, fearing they might disturb these rare animals.
The incident quickly drew attention from local authorities including transportation, forestry, and conservation departments. During their patrols, the Yueyang County Traffic Bureau's Water Transport Centre Law Enforcement Team rescued a young deer in danger and safely brought it ashore.
Simultaneously, forestry and conservation departments took swift action, monitoring the deer's movements around the clock, providing temporary shelters, and replenishing their food supply.
According to data from the Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve Administration, the Eld's deer population in the area has reached 289 individuals. Reserve staff members stated they are closely monitoring the deer's migration paths and habitats to ensure the safety of these rare animals.
