UK: Julian Assange Released from Belmarsh Prison and Flies to Australia
United Kingdom - June 25, 2024
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been released from Belmarsh prison and has left the UK. A video published by WikiLeaks on the social network X shows Assange boarding a plane to Australia. NBC News reports that he reached a plea agreement with the US Attorney's Office, leading to his release.
“He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of June 24, after 1,901 days within its walls. The High Court in London granted him bail and he was released that afternoon to Stansted Airport, where he boarded a plane out of the UK,” WikiLeaks announced.
Assange faced US charges for his role in one of the largest releases of classified information in American history, during Barack Obama's first term. In 2009, he conspired with military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who provided him with tens of thousands of reports on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, State Department cables, and analytical reviews of Guantanamo prisoners.
