El Salvador: Losses assessed in El Salvador following heavy rains
San Salvador, El Salvador - June 26, 2024
The deputy minister of MAG, Oscar Dominguez, said that there are areas badly affected by so much rainfall and said that drones will be used, a digital tool provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which provides data in real time.
Almost a week ago, Agriculture detailed that 36.2 percent of fruit, vegetables, basic grains and agribusiness crops were affected, especially due to stress caused by excess humidity and the proliferation of fungi.
"The more than 8,500 manzanas that have been monitored are the most productive areas of the country. In this case, there are the irrigation districts and other areas of various crops, including the southern zone of San Miguel, Zapotita and Atiocoyo," said Dominguez.
The Asociacion Camara Salvadorena de Pequenos y Medianos Productores Agropecuarios (Salvadoran Chamber of Small and Medium Agricultural Producers Association) maintains that the heavy rainfall did not affect basic grain crops to any great extent, as farmers waited until June to start planting because of the late onset of winter, but the issue is serious.
For example, the Unidad Ecologica Salvadorena reported that in the southern zone of Ahuachapan there were total losses in maize and vegetable crops.
This impact is registered throughout the country, as in some places the rainfall was more intense than in others, flooding crops and provoking a crisis that will be felt by producers in the coming days.
