El Salvador: More than 300 tons of rubbish accumulated on El Salvador's beaches after heavy rains
Acajutla, El Salvador - June 24, 2024
The recent rains in Central America, and particularly in El Salvador, set off alarms about the amount of rubbish washed up along parts of the country's coastline.
The Salvadoran authorities indicated that nearly 300 tons of rubbish accumulated on the beaches of Acajutla, a district that makes up the municipality of Sonsonate Oeste.
In the images shared by different media, one can see all kinds of plastic and even dead animals, some in a state of decomposition. The latter increases the population's concern about the possibility of disease.
This situation is not an isolated incident for the population of Acajutla and the surrounding area. The inhabitants themselves confirmed to other media, such as El Pais, that every year during the rainy season, waste of all kinds is washed ashore by the strong currents of water.
