A stray kitten named Chai found herself in a harrowing encounter with coyotes on a porch in the Atlanta area, only to be rescued and welcomed into a loving home by Jasmine and her family.

In the early hours of June 12th, Chai sought refuge from a pack of coyotes, demonstrating remarkable bravery and survival instincts. Jasmine recounted how Chai's assertive hiss and quick thinking deterred the predators, allowing her to escape onto the porch where the scent of nearby humans may have provided additional protection.

Hi, my name is Jasmine and a 7 month old stray kitten came to my families porch seeking shelter from coyotes. On June 12th at approximately 1:30 A.M., she can be seen being chased by what appeared to be a coyote. Moments later, another arrived and it became clear that it was a pack of coyotes. Through her bravery and a bit of luck, she was able to scare them off. Why the coyotes did not follow her onto the porch is a mystery. My best guess is that she was able to seek a higher ground and let out a very assertive hiss to deter them. Other guesses include that either the coyotes were not desperate/hungry enough to continue following her or that the scent of humans living nearby worked as a deterrent.

Since this footage was captured on a doorbell that is not designed to pick up small movement or animals, we did not receive any notifications. Later that morning at approximately 9A.M., we saw the footage and hopped into action. We have a live animal trap specifically for safely and humanly catching stray cats. Within 15 minutes of setting out the trap, we were able to catch her and bring her in. We have many stray cats in the area and will work with our local non-kill shelter for TNR (trap neuter release). We thought she was feral and had planned to release her after getting her spayed and up to date on her shots.

The moment she stepped out of the cage, we saw how sweet and affectionate she is. She greeted us with a friendly chatter which seemed like her way of saying "thank you". This was not a cat that enjoyed being outside or had any desire to go back into the wild. Once we saw this, there was absolutely no question as to whether or not we would be keeping her. She decided that she would be living with us rent free, regardless of whatever plans we had.

We have introduced her to our other rescue cat, Mocha. After just a few days, we decided to name her "Chai" since she's got a bit of spice to her for standing up to the coyotes. Chai and Mocha have warmed up to each-other and can be seen eating and playing together. Our family feels so blessed that she chose us to be her "furever family".

We are so grateful that her story has brought awareness to the dangers outdoor cats and strays face on a daily basis. All of our pets are rescues and we hope to continue rescuing and fostering animals.
