According to the latest statistics from Network Rail’s Sussex route, there were 194 instances of misuse and 29 near misses at level crossings during the last fiscal year (2023/24). While this marks a 15% decrease in misuse incidents from the previous year, there has been a 3% increase in near misses, underscoring ongoing safety concerns.

Network Rail is intensifying efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of misusing level crossings through a new safety campaign as the summer holidays kick off. The initiative comes in response to alarming incidents captured in recent video footage, depicting individuals risking their lives at these crossings.

Across Network Rail’s Southern region, which spans from Devon to Kent, data since 2017 reveals a 15% reduction in misuse incidents, yet a troubling 31% rise in near misses. Network Rail emphasizes that even one near miss is too many, reaffirming their commitment to prioritizing safety for rail passengers and freight operators across Southern England.
