Nepal plane crash captured on video as 18 die
This is the horrifying moment a plane crashed and exploded in a fireball in Nepal this morning.
The Bombardier CRJ 200 operated by Saurya Airlines was travelling to Pokhara when it reportedly skidded off the runway during a botched take-off at around 11 am local time.
There were reportedly 19 people onboard, with at least 18 of them killed in the crash. The pilot survived.
A Qatar Airways Airbus A330 can be seen parked on the tarmac, while behind it the smaller plane plunges to the ground following a failed takeoff.
Videos from the scene show a large fire with smoke rising at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Firefighters doused the fire to bring it under control.
A firemen at the scene said today that 18 of those onboard had died.
Airport spokesman Premnath Thakur said that those onboard included the crew and passengers, which included airline technicians.
The European Union has banned carriers from Nepal from using its airspace amid safety concerns. There have been at least 12 fatal jet crashes in the Himalayan region since 2010.
