Huge swathes of central Paris are locked down and under heavy security ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony set for Friday evening.

With an enormous security operation in place, 30,000 gendarmes are patrolling the streets throughout the games and thousands of barriers line the streets forbidding any access to the Seine without a QR code.

Rarely in peacetime has Paris seen such heavy security.

The river remains closed to the public as preparations are underway for the spectacular opening ceremony taking place across 6 km of the Seine and many of Paris's famous landmarks.
