UK: Activists Disrupt Airports Worldwide in 'Oil Kills' Uprising
London, United Kingdom - July 27, 2024
July 27 marked the fourth consecutive day of global action as hundreds participated in a widespread uprising against fossil fuels under the banner of "Oil Kills". From Switzerland to the United Kingdom, activists staged disruptive protests aimed at airports and government buildings, demanding an end to oil, gas, and coal use by 2030.
In Switzerland, groups like DROP Fossil Fuel Subsidies and Act Now! left a vivid mark at EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse, painting orange lines and dropping banners advocating for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. Simultaneously, Vienna Airport witnessed mass demonstrations by Letzte Generation Austria, where activists glued themselves to check-in desks and released orange confetti, underscoring their message with direct action.
Across the UK, demonstrators from Just Stop Oil faced detainment after peaceful protests at Heathrow Airport, highlighting the contentious issue of aviation's environmental impact. Meanwhile, Extinction Rebellion Netherlands staged simultaneous protests outside Amsterdam Schipol and Maastrict Aachen airports, echoing calls for climate justice.
In a statement, Ines Teles of Stay Grounded emphasized the urgent need to curb fossil fuel consumption, labeling today's disruptions as a wake-up call for climate action. The coalition of groups involved, spanning over 10 countries including the United States and Canada, underscored their commitment to challenging governmental inaction and corporate greed.
As actions continue to unfold globally, the movement remains steadfast in its call for immediate and decisive international measures to mitigate climate change, declaring unequivocally: Oil Kills.
