Building collapses into Parvati river amidst raging floods in northern India
In northern India’s Himachal Pradesh, a building was destroyed and swept away by the swollen Parvati River due to severe rains, which also led to the loss of a footbridge and three makeshift structures. Authorities have issued weather alerts as heavy rains are expected to continue.
The incident took place at Shaat Sabzi Mandi in Malana area near the Parvati River in the Kullu district on August 1.
Visuals showed amidst the intense and relentless downpour, a complete building collapsed and was swept away into the river. The heavy rain, falling continuously, led to the river swelling and increasing its flow force. As a result, the entire structure, unable to withstand the overwhelming force of the water, crumbled and was carried away by the raging currents.
On Thursday morning, a significant structural disaster occurred in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, when a building collapsed and was carried away by the ferocious currents of the Parvati River. The collapse was triggered by a surge in the river’s flow, caused by intense rainfall in the region. The details regarding the building’s occupancy at the time of the incident are still unknown.
Earlier in the week, a severe flash flood, induced by a cloudburst in Tosh Nallah, devastated the area by washing away a footbridge and three makeshift sheds, including a liquor shop. The flash flood struck the Tosh area of Manikaran early Tuesday, though no casualties have been reported. Deputy Commissioner of Kullu, Torul S. Raveesh, urged residents to avoid rivers and temporary structures near drains to prevent further disasters. A team has been dispatched to evaluate the damage.
The recent heavy rainfall has also impacted the region, with 60 mm of precipitation reported in Una. This has led to road flooding and waterlogging in the tehsil office. The local meteorological office has issued an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning for six districts in Himachal Pradesh for Wednesday and Thursday. A Yellow Alert for heavy rain in isolated areas is also in effect for August 2 and 3. The forecast predicts continued widespread precipitation and intensified monsoon activity through August 5.
