This is the moment a sinkhole opens up in front of a shop and swallows a large tree.

The incident took place in front of a village radio maintenance service centre in Xiangtan in Hunan, China, on Sunday, July 28.

The pavement in front of the shop suddenly sank, resulting in a collapse that reached a depth of nearly five metres (16 feet).

The large tree, positioned at the entrance, fell vertically into the opening created by the collapse.

The event was recorded by a nearby CCTV camera, capturing the moment of the sinkhole's development.

Passersby observed the scene from a distance, maintaining a safe space as emergency services were alerted.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation as authorities examine the structural integrity of the area around the shop and the circumstances that led to the sudden failure of the ground.
