North Berwick, United Kingdom - August 11, 2024

Volunteers from North Berwick RNLI sprang into action on Sunday, August 11, launching their D-class lifeboat SUNIJO following a distress call from a kayak struggling in strong sea breezes.

Responding swiftly to the 999 call, the lifeboat crew navigated to the kayak's reported position near the island chain off the coast. Within eight minutes of launch, they located the kayak and safely brought aboard its four occupants—two adults and two children.

The casualties, equipped with wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and two waterproof means of communication, were assessed on board before being transported back to shore. They were subsequently handed over to the care of North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team. Despite their preparation, the group had encountered challenging conditions beyond their initial expectations.

Tom Kerley, a crew member, highlighted the sudden transition from sheltered to rough conditions as they rounded Fidra Island, making it unsafe for the kayak to proceed without risking swamping or capsizing.

"Conditions offshore can vary significantly from those closer to shore and can change rapidly," Kerley emphasized, urging water enthusiasts to remain vigilant and alert authorities promptly in case of difficulty.
