STORYLINE:

The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has surpassed 40,000, Gaza-based health authorities said on Thursday.

People in Gaza continued to suffer as hopes for a ceasefire remained bleak.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): MOHAMMED HAMMAD, Gaza resident
"Life is tragic and nonexistent. People are trying to adapt but there is no optimism that this suffering will end anytime soon. Honestly, we are doing everything we can to survive and adapt, but the destruction and death everywhere prevent us from doing so. We hope to hear good news tomorrow (on Aug. 15) after the ceasefire talks that will be held in Doha, but at the same time, I fear that the efforts for a ceasefire will fail, especially since we are approaching a year of war."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): NEDAL ABBAS, Gaza resident
"The poverty rate is very high because we have no income. Diseases are widespread due to the overcrowding of the residents and the displaced. The markets are witnessing great chaos. As a result, the rate of psychological pressure among people has increased significantly, and this is understandable due to the tragic situation that the local population is living in. But unfortunately, in the current situation, although I do not like to be pessimistic, I am not optimistic about the success of the negotiation efforts, because I do not trust both parties. There are no indications that we will have peace in the near future, because the two parties have not agreed to end this conflict."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): SAMEH AL-MADHOUN, Gaza resident
"We are suffering a lot because of the war and there are no signs of life here due to the continued suffering of the people. There are no necessities of life. We have no security, safety or anything. The situation is deplorable."
