Spain: Police Dismantle Spiritual Retreat Offering Hallucinogenic Drugs in Tenerife
Spain - August 21, 2024
TENERIFE, Canary Islands - The National Police have arrested three men in Tegueste, Tenerife, suspected of organizing and promoting spiritual retreats that involved the administration of potent hallucinogenic drugs, posing significant risks to public health. The arrests, part of a recent operation by the Provincial Information Brigade of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, targeted a group accused of violating public health laws.
The investigation began after multiple reports about an association promoting these retreats on the island, promising spiritual and health benefits through the use of psychoactive substances. The location of these retreats was kept secret until just before the event, disclosed only after participants had paid an entry fee ranging from 150 to 500 euros, indicating a sophisticated operation designed to evade legal scrutiny.
During raids authorized by judicial order at a rural property where the retreat was held, police seized various powerful hallucinogens, including:
Ayahuasca - Known for its intense effects on perception.
Rape - A tobacco powder used to enhance other drugs' effects.
Bufo toad secretions - An extremely potent hallucinogen.
Kambo frog - Induces strong physiological responses.
San Pedro cactus - Contains mescalina, a potent psychedelic.
LSD - One of the most recognized psychedelic drugs.
Additionally, 1,200 euros in cash were confiscated, suggesting significant illegal economic activity linked to these retreats.
The main suspect, aged 51, along with two accomplices aged 37 and 44, were detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning before being handed over to judicial authorities.
This operation highlights the severe health risks associated with the uncontrolled use of these substances. Previous incidents have linked similar retreats to fatalities, underscoring the lethal potential of these drugs when not medically supervised.
The National Police have issued a warning to the public to be cautious of such retreats, which often cloak themselves in the guise of ancient healing rituals. While marketed as transformative experiences, these events involve illegal and hazardous substances that can lead to serious, long-term health consequences, both physically and mentally.
The promotion of these retreats often employs a narrative of spiritual healing, but in reality, they offer a dangerous cocktail of drugs without proper oversight, potentially leading to life-threatening situations. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance against the allure of quick spiritual fixes that could end in tragedy.
