Garden Island, Australia - August 21, 2024

The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS Hawaii (SSN 776) has arrived at HMAS Stirling for a scheduled maintenance period, marking a significant step in the AUKUS partnership's submarine cooperation efforts. Docking on August 22, 2024, the submarine will undergo a Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period (STMP) facilitated by the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39).

This visit is part of AUKUS Pillar 1, an initiative aimed at enhancing Australia's defense capabilities through the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines. The maintenance period at HMAS Stirling underscores the deepening military cooperation between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States under the AUKUS framework, focusing on technology sharing and capability building.

The USS Emory S. Land, equipped to provide maintenance, repair, and supply services for submarines, is currently stationed at HMAS Stirling to support this operation. The maintenance of USS Hawaii not only ensures the operational readiness of the submarine but also serves as a practical demonstration of the AUKUS agreement's commitment to fostering a sovereign submarine capability for Australia.
