STORYLINE:
STANDUP (English): JIANG HAORAN, Xinhua correspondent
"Microalgae grow in the glassware of green liquid in my hand, with each microalga averaging only 5 micrometers in size. Microalgae perform very well in carbon sequestration, with an efficiency of more than ten times higher than that of forests. More surprisingly, microalgae can be nourished with coke oven flue gas. Compared with traditional techniques, microalgae emission reduction technology has numerous advantages. Let's step into Antai Industrial Park in Jiexiu, north China's Shanxi Province, to find out more."
This "carbon reduction" project involves cultivating microalgae with industrial emissions. The microalgae efficiently capture the carbon dioxide in the waste gas. Through photosynthesis, the microalgae produce algae powder, which has high added value and nutritional value.
This technology not only achieves efficient reduction of carbon dioxide emissions but also enables carbon and nitrogen sequestration, thereby achieving industrial emission reductions.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): ZHANG LIANG, General manager of Shanxi Antai Enyi Biotechnology Company
"When it comes to carbon reduction, microalgae are highly efficient and do not occupy land resources. They can also make good use of idle agricultural land."
Microalgae transforms the scenario of emission-producing companies facing only costs and no returns from gas treatment. While enhancing environmental benefits, the innovation also provides companies with significant carbon sink income and economic benefits.
Some pollutants in industrial waste gas can also be converted into nutrients for microalgae.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZHANG LIANG, General manager of Shanxi Antai Enyi Biotechnology Company
"Industrial gases contain not only carbon dioxide but also nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. By further degrading these gases, we introduce nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide into water bodies to serve as nutrient salts for microalgae, which act as a growth medium."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Jiexiu, China.
