Joyful moment boy, 6, celebrates his successful heart transplant
This is the joyful moment a six-year-old boy celebrates his successful heart transplant in Ohio, United States.
John-Henry Lee, who fought hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), received a life-saving heart transplant in May 2024 at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital.
Born with HLHS, John-Henry had previously undergone multiple surgeries, including the Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan procedures, but his condition worsened, leading to the need for a transplant.
Dr Gerard Boyle of Cleveland Clinic Children's stressed the seriousness of John-Henry's condition: 'After the Fontan procedure, some patients can survive into adulthood, but John-Henry's right ventricle couldn't cope, and his health deteriorated rapidly.'
The transplant, performed by Dr Hani Najm, was successful but came with complications like gastroparesis and transplant rejection.
Despite these challenges, the young boy's recovery has been impressive.
His mother, Sarah Lee, said: 'Before rehab, John-Henry could barely move. Now, he's running around and playing like a kid again.'
The Lee family is now advocating for organ donation, expressing their deep gratitude for the donor's family.
Dr Boyle said John-Henry's case shows the importance of organ donations.
